Music Theory

Training

Broadly Diversified, Practically Oriented, Individually

Study

Music theory students are integrated into the Music Theory Centre, where a lively event culture is cultivated both inside and outside the college. In addition to music theory lessons, students enjoy individual lessons in composition for the duration of their studies. These composition lessons can be supplemented during the course of studies by jazz, rock, pop composition and lessons in the Studio for Electronic Music.

Teaching Practice and Academic Career

The preparation for teaching is promoted by the teaching of methodology/teaching practice; the students are integrated into the college teaching in a qualifying way. The preparation for an academic career is additionally deepened by regular music-theoretical lecture evenings and concerts in which students present their scientific and artistic skills. Furthermore, particularly suitable students have the opportunity to earn a doctorate in music theory directly after completing their bachelor's degree at the Dresden College of Music.

Centre for Music Theory

Since 2007, the Music Theory Centre has been a meeting place for all music-theoretical activities outside the college's teaching activities. The aim is to sharpen the profile of the subject in line with the changing times. Guest lectures, workshops and interdisciplinary projects will be held for this purpose. Cooperation within and outside the university rounds off the profile. New teaching methods are also being tested and researched, including the "Orlando" multimedia aural training programme
