Questions & Answers about BAföG & Student Financing

Scholarships & Student Loans

Besides BAföG (Federal Training Assistance Act), it is also possible to finance studies through a scholarship. However, as a rule, you may loose your entitlement to BAföG funding when receiving a scholarship. The Germany Scholarship (Deutschlandstipendium) is an exception to this.

Jobs for Students

For many students, working during holidays or in their free time alongside their studies is a way to finance their education. Even those receiving BAföG (German Federal Training Assistance Act) have the opportunity to supplement their income with a student job.

However, finding the right job isn't always easy. The Dresden Student Union has compiled some recommendations for job hunting:

Discounts for Students Those who save earn!

Wherever entrance fees are charged, students can save money by presenting their student ID. Whether in museums, cinemas, tourist attractions, swimming pools, theaters, or other venues: students can often pay less than others. It is therefore strongly recommended to always have your student ID readily available.

Venues

The Semperoper Dresden offers students many special opportunities to attend opera and ballet performances at discounted prices. One such option is student tickets, which are always sold at the box office for €10 starting 30 minutes before the performance, provided tickets are still available for that particular show.

At all venues of the Staatsschauspiel Dresden (Dresden State Theatre), students pay only a few euros for all performances.

Other venues also offer student discounts – always ask about them when purchasing tickets!

Museums

All of Dresden's museums, including those belonging to the Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen Dresden (Dresden State Art Collections), offer discounted admission for students. Many museums also offer free entry: Admission to the Städtischen Museen und Galerien (municipal museums and galleries) is regularly free on Fridays (excluding public holidays), usually starting at noon.

The Deutsche Hygiene-Museum (German Hygiene Museum) also often offers free admission.

Student ID = Semester Ticket

With the semester ticket, you can easily get around at any time. The ticket is valid for the Upper Elbe Transport Association (VVO) on all buses, trams, and passenger ferries in and around Dresden, and also on regional rail services (SPNV) in Saxony. Different rules apply depending on the area of validity. Further information can be found on the VVO website.

Good to know: Bicycles can also travel free of charge at night and on weekends.
