Studio for Voice Research

Founded in 1959 by Prof. Harry Schwickardi, the Studio for Voice Research bridges the gap between vocal pedagogy and scientific research into the singing voice. Its areas of activity—research, teaching, clinical care, consultation, and therapy—are managed by a team of physicians, vocal pedagogues, and acousticians.

Research

In addition to the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the singing voice (voice range profiling, computer-aided sound analysis), the focus lies on research into issues regarding sound production, musicality, phonatory breathing, and the professional development of vocal students. The aim is to derive criteria relevant to predicting outcomes in vocal training. Comprehensive assessments conducted at the start of studies provide information on vocal aptitude, musicality, and phoniatric and psychological aspects, while yielding initial, relevant insights for individual training strategies.

Education

The lecture series “Vocal Physiology” provides aspiring singers with knowledge regarding the functioning of the vocal apparatus, breathing, the resonance system, and the sense of hearing, as well as issues concerning vocal hygiene and preventive care. The course addresses questions regarding individual vocal training in the context of problems encountered during their studies.

Outpatient Care, Counseling, and Therapy

Specialized medical care is provided for voice disorders. Through the direct collaboration of the phoniatrist, student, and vocal pedagogue, potential adverse developments can be identified and remedied at an early stage.
