Entrance Examination

Admission Requirement:
University entrance qualification (equivalent to the „Abitur“ in Germany)

 

Language requirements:

For enrolment: Proof of German language skills according to level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

The following language certificates are accepted:

  • TestDaF
  • TELC
  • Goethe certificate
  • UNI Cert
  • ÖSD certificate

In addition, language certificates according to the European Framework of Reference are also accepted by language schools that have recognized quality management certificates.

Students at the HfM Dresden who have received admission subject to proof of German language skills can take part in the language course offered at the HfM Dresden. Studies can only be continued in the second semester if the German exam at the HfM Dresden has been passed at the required level or, alternatively, a language certificate has been submitted according to the criteria listed above.

 

Main Subject:

The applicant should submit 3-5 compositions. The exam committee then decides upon invitation to the entrance exam. The exam consists of an interview (ca. 25 min.) regarding the submitted compositions, understanding of music theory, and checks for aural aptitude (chords, dissonances, rhythms) as well as prima-vista singing of a simple melody.

Further Subjects:

Another part of the curriculum is instrumental trainig or Live-Electronic or Sonic Scienes. The applicant can choose the subject according to ability; after start of the semester, the corresponding modules are then taken ("Musizierpraxis A mit Klavier" oder "Musizierpraxis B mit Wahlfach"). When choosing the Wahlfach (elective subject), the piano trainig is still part of the curriculum, but will happen on a somewhat lower niveau. Thus, the contents of the entrance exam will depend on the elective choice. Please note your instrument/elective when submitting the application .

a) Musizierpraxis Klavier

Artistic presentation (15-20 minutes) of pieces from 2-3 different styles. They should be representative of the instrumental and musical aptitude and display the potential for development of the applicant. The choice can be made according to individual abilities.

b) Musizierpraxis Wahlfach

The Wahlfach (elective subject) can be set in all artistic subjects, which can be enrolled in as artistic Bachelor course of study at the HfM Dresden. Furthermore, Live-Electronic or Sonic Scienes can be taken instead.

- When taking an instrumental or vocal elective: Artistic presentation (15-20 minutes) of pieces from 2-3 different styles. They should be representative of the instrumental and musical aptitude and display the potential for development of the applicant. The choice can be made according to individual abilities.

or

- When opting for Live-Electronic or Sonic Sciences, the applicant should present his current state of research on the particular rield (ca. 15-20 min.). A summary of the presentation should already be submitted with the  application documents.

as well as in both cases additionally:

- Artistic presentation on the piano (15-20 minutes) of pieces from 2-3 different styles. They should be representative of the instrumental and musical aptitude and display the potential for development of the applicant. The choice can be made according to individual abilities.
