Application & Requirements Bachelor Piano

Entrance Examination

Admission Requirement:
University entrance qualification (equivalent to the „Abitur“ in Germany)

 

Language requirements:

For enrolment: language certificate at least level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)

  • Certificate of the Goethe-Institute B1 or
  • European Certificate B1 or
  • UniCert I or
  • a comparable language certificate

The study programme can be taken up for a limited period of time for one semester if the required language certificate is not available until matriculation. The first semester must be used for learning the German language. The college offers its own language courses for a fee. In order to be able to continue the studies, language skills must be demonstrated at the required level at the end of the first semester.

Main Subject:

  • Proof of technical, rhythmic, melodic and harmonic abilities and experience, corresponding to the individual instrument (scales, chord arpeggios, jazz phrasing, rhythmic reliability, seqences, chord progressions e.g. II-V-I, rhythm changes, blues)
  • Performance of two stilistically distinct pieces from the area of Jazz/Rock/Pop with improvisations, backing/accompaniment according to the individual instrument
  • Performance of a self-created transcription and of an written score etude piece
  • If possible an original composition or self-created arrangement of a freely chosen piece
  • If possible a freely chosen classical piece
  • Elementary sight-reading

The duration is approx. 15-20 mintes.

The examination program has to be provided in written form.
Accompaniment can be provided via a rhythm section of the Hochschule (dr, b, p or g; sheet material has to be brought) or your own formation.
Besides a good musical and instrumental educational background, genre-specific feeling as well as flexibility when playing with the ensemble is expected.

Music Theory/Aural Training
Written Test

  • General Music Theory
  • Basic knowledge of modal and functional analysis, jazz-specific chord symbols and phrases, also in staff notation
  • Aural Traning: Listening test with intervals, scales, jazz chords, melodies and rythms

The applicant can be subjected to a short oral exam (ca. 5 minutes) regarding the above mentioned questions, if the tester deems this necessary. The exam might also include singing sight-reading.

Course of Studies

Motto: “…tracing the sound “

The training consists of several modules.
The compilation represents an excerpt of the most important points.

Module 1: Jazz specific basic training

  • Learning II-IV-I - Connections, Turnarounds, Blues and Rhythm changes in all keys
  • Different standards in all keys
  • Own standard arrangements
  • Self-created transcriptions of style-forming pianists
  • Combination of jazz and Latin piano playing
  • Teaching the playing technique of stylish electric pianos of jazz/rock/pop history (Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer E-Piano, Hohner Clavinet)
  • Development of important solo piano techniques (e.g. Stride-Piano, Walking Bass)
  • Accompaniment of soloists and band play

Module 2: European Piano Music

Teaching of different playing techniques and playing styles:

  • E.g. piano exercises by Hanon and etudes by Cramer-Bülow
  • Piano music from baroque to 20th century (e.g. Bach, Händel to Schulhoff, Kabalewski, Ginastera)
  • Sight-reading

This is accompanied by getting to know various stylistic and expressive means of European piano music and sensitization to its specific sound culture.

Module 3: Advancement of individuality

This module brings together what you have previously learned. Special attention is paid to promoting the individual characteristics of each student.

  • Joint development of own compositions•
  • Activity with advanced improvisation techniques (e.g. polyphonic chorus playing)
  • Playing in a piano trio

The aim of the study programme is to become a professional musician with very good craftsmanship, a broad stylistic spectrum and own musical signature.

For enrolment: Proof of German language skills according to level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The following language certificates are accepted:

  • TestDaF Level 3 (Test German as a Foreign Language, level 3) or
  • DSH-1 (German language examination for university entrance, level 1) or
  • European Certificate B2 or
  • UniCert II or
  • a comparable language certificate

Aptitude Interview:
An interview of circa 10 to 15 minutes regarding the motivation for studying music pedagogy. The participants should reflect their existing epxirience in pedagogical situations (mainly from a student perspective) and develop an idea about successful student-teacher relationships. Based on the applicatants own musical training, questions about the job profile are to be discussed.

 Requirements of the Entrance Examination:
The same admission requirements apply as for Jazz/Rock/Pop (artistically), since the two courses of study are conducted in parallel in the first four semesters.
